A Potted History Riverside Inn
The first documentary evidence of the premises is a deed dated 25th march 1797 (in the 37th year of our sovereign Lord George the third) in which the new inn, previously known as the Old Church House and then the Green Dragon before being rebuilt, together with the stables and outhouses and one acre of ground on which a dwelling house stood, and also called the Ship Inn or Alehouse situated near to the churchyard which was released from the ownership of William Woodward to Mr John Ingram on payment of eight shillings and Ten pence Halfpenny per year forever to Mr Woodward and his heirs and a single payment of £400. A quit payment of 6/10 ½ d was also payable to the lord of the manor of Michael Creech every year in perpetuity.
On the 17th may, 1802 (in the 42nd year of the reign of our sovereign lord George the third) a 1000 year lease at a peppercorn rent was sold to Joseph Sedwick of Spaxton for £620
On 11th December 1823, 2 acres of waste ground was granted to the New Inn by act of parliament in lieu of rights of common
On 27th September 1831, a plot of land was sold to John Goodland (coal merchant) in the sum of £160 and he built a house
On 21st February 1835, a plot of land was retained on the sale of the remainder and a cottage built which was rented to the main leaseholder Mr Sedwick
Since then until 1929 all the records refer to the Ship Inn or Alehouse
Although it is not shown in the deeds it is believed that the original building was burned down before being rebuilt in the mid 18th century and that it had previously been owned by monks when it was known as the Old Church House
The name was changed in the 1980’s to the Riverside Inn by the owners who held a lease from Whitbread Brewery, after which it was sold to Mr & Mrs Collins in 1991.
